Apple and Google Store In-App Purchases and Commission

1. In-App Purchases

A new client can download your app for free and buy your product or subscription inside the app using their Apple/Google account. This is called an in-app purchase.

Payments will then be processed by Apple/Google directly and clients get full access to all your app content automatically after purchasing.

In-App Purchases are good for low ticket offers/tripwires. Any higher ticket should be done outside the app. Check this article: How to create hidden pricing.

2. App Store Commission

It's a common misconception that Apple and Google take 30% of all revenue.

The reality is:

  • You don't have to sell with IAPs (in-app purchases) - you can sell on the web app and still give access to the app (like Netflix and Spotify do).

  • You can sell via PassionPayments (3.9%) or you can sell via your own checkout URL and connect via Zapier to your app

  • You pay only 15% app store commission for IAPs up to $1m/y

  • You pay 30% commission on IAPs after $1m/y

If you make less than $1m/y, you can apply for their start-up program where they charge 15% :

3. Cancelling In-App Purchases

You will not have the ability to cancel your client's subscription in PassionMetrics, your client would need to do this themselves on their mobile device via their Google Play/Apple App store.

For more information, check out this article: How your clients can cancel a subscription purchased in Google Play Store and Apple App Store?
